Divorce & Custody Coach

As a Coach, you will provide guidance and support to individuals undergoing the emotional and
logistical challenges of divorce and custody arrangements. This role involves offering strategies
for effective communication, savings, co-parenting, and conflict resolution while helping clients
manage their emotional well-being and navigate the legal complexities of divorce.


Responsibilities of Divorce & Custody Coach:

Client Assessment and Planning

  • Conduct initial assessments to understand clients’ needs, goals, issues, and challenges.
  • Develop personalized coaching plans tailored to each client’s circumstances.

Coaching and Support

  • Provide one-on-one coaching sessions, both in-person and virtually.
  • Assist clients in developing effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Offer emotional support and coping strategies throughout the divorce process.
  • Guide clients in creating and implementing custody agreements.
  • Support clients in understanding and managing legal documentation and procedures.
  • Implement savings techniques for clients.

Co-Parenting Guidance

  • Advise clients on co-parenting best practices and maintaining a positive relationship with their ex-spouse for the benefit of their children.
  • Help clients develop and adhere to co-parenting plans.
  • Address and mediate conflicts that arise in co-parenting arrangements.

Conflict Resolution

  • Teach conflict resolution techniques to manage disputes effectively.
  • Facilitate constructive conversations between clients and their ex-spouses when necessary.
  • Prepare clients for successful mediation.

Educational Workshops and Resources

  • Conduct workshops and group sessions on divorce, custody, and co-parenting topics.
  • Provide clients with educational materials and resources to support their journey.

Progress Tracking and Reporting

  • Monitor client progress and adjust coaching strategies as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of client sessions and progress.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to clients on their progress.

Job Requirements

  1. Education:
    A bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, family studies, or a related field is preferred. Advanced degrees such as a JD are a plus.
  2. Certification:
    Certification as a divorce coach from reputable organizations such as the International Coach Federation (ICF), the Association of Divorce Financial Planners (ADFP), or the Academy of Professional Family Mediators (APFM) demonstrates specialized training.
  3. Experience:
    Relevant experience in coaching, counseling, mediation, or related fields is highly valuable. Experience with individuals and families undergoing divorce or custody proceedings, including knowledge of legal and financial aspects, is particularly beneficial.
  4. Specialized Training:
    Completion of specialized training programs or workshops focused on divorce coaching, conflict resolution, co-parenting, child development, and related topics enhances a coach’s skills and knowledge in this area.
  5. Communication Skills:
    Excellent communication skills, including active listening, empathy, clarity, and assertiveness, are essential for effectively supporting clients through the emotional and practical challenges of divorce and custody disputes.
  6. Empathy and Compassion:
    The ability to empathize with clients’ experiences, validate their emotions, and offer compassionate support without judgment is crucial for building trust and rapport in the coaching relationship.
  7. Conflict Resolution Skills:
    Proficiency in conflict resolution techniques, negotiation strategies, and mediation skills is important for helping clients navigate disputes and reach amicable resolutions with their ex-partner or co-parent.
  8. Knowledge of Legal and Financial Issues:
    A solid understanding of the legal and financial aspects of divorce and custody proceedings, including relevant laws, regulations, and procedures, enables coaches to provide informed guidance and referrals to clients.
  9. Ethical Standards:
    Adherence to ethical guidelines and professional standards of conduct, including confidentiality, integrity, and respect for clients’ autonomy and self-determination, is essential in the coaching profession.
  10. Continuous Learning:
    Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated on best practices, research findings, and emerging trends in divorce coaching and family dynamics is important for maintaining competence and effectiveness as a coach.
